Abstract

Studying classic books in traditional Islamic boarding schools which have been known to be very loyal to the texts read, but it turns out that on the other hand, there is a renewal of meaning by mbah Moen while reading the book of tafsir al-Jalālain. Meanwhile, research on the recitation of al-Jalālain commentary in Indonesia itself has not yet touched on the aspect of the expansion of meaning carried out by the kiai. At least the study of the interpretation of al-Jalālain in Indonesia can be mapped into three, namely focusing on examining the ideology or tendencies of the preachers in reciting the book of interpretations of al-Jalālain, focusing on examining audience responses, and some others focusing on examining the recitation methods used by the preachers in reciting the commentary. al-Jalalain. In line with that, this research will examine the reception carried out by mbah Moen in reading al-Jalālain interpretation, the factors that influence mbah Moen reception, and at the same time its implications. This research is classified as a qualitative research type with a content analysis study using Stuart Hall reception analysis knife. The results of the study show that mbah Moen reception in reading al-Jalālain interpretation can be categorized as a dominant-hegemonic position, negotiated position, and oppositional position. The factors that encourage mbah Moen have different meanings from al-Jalālain interpretation, namely: strengthening political and ideological identity, differences in geographical location and the development of modern science, and social context. Mbah Moen reception which is not always in line with al-Jalālain texts proves that learning in Islamic boarding schools is not always textualist, only fixated on classical texts.
