Abstract

Self esteem is something that is important for every individual, especially in children. The death of parents when they still need a protective figure, encouragement and also giving direction in living life makes children experience a change in status that affects psychological development and causes a decrease in self-esteem. Islam teaches its adherents to care for each other about phenomena like this. Therefore, it is necessary to provide assistance through religious teachings, to provide understanding, knowledge, motivation and also awareness in living their lives. One of the interventions that can be used to increase the self-esteem of orphans is Islamic religious guidance. This study aims to identify, describe and analyze Islamic religious guidance methods to increase the self-esteem of orphans at the Bumi Damai Shelter Foundation, Kotagede, Yogyakarta. The research is qualitative in nature with the type of descriptive research conducted by means of data collection techniques of observation, interviews and documentation. The subjects in this study were 1 foundation administrator, 2 religious supervisors and 5 fostered orphans. The results of this study indicate that the method of implementing Islamic religious guidance to increase the self-esteem of orphans is using the exemplary method, the advice method, the habituation method and the reward method. The use of this method is in Islamic religious guidance at the Bumi Damai Shelter Foundation, Kotagede, Yogyakarta considered effective in increasing the self-esteem of orphans because it is able to provide various positive changes to their condition which previously tended to lack self-confidence, difficult to adapt, pessimistic, unable to express oneself and feelings, has high anxiety and thinks irrationally. Become an individual who is more confident, optimistic, and has responsibility and courage in living life.
