Abstract
Communication is a two-way process between the communicator and the communicant. However, there is type of communication that runs vertically that create gaps between communicators. Communication that runs vertically makes the communicator dominant unliterally, it is means that there are one group that harmed in communication process. One group that is vulnerable to being disadvantaged is the muted group. In fact, communication must runs effectively, when the muted group should be able to get equal right in the communication process. Therefore, the researcher is interested in analyzing the representation of the muted group in the short movie Please Be Quiet. Researcher is also interested in finding out what forms of muted group are depicted in this movie. This study uses the Roland Bartes model of semiotic analysis with descriptive approach. The result of the analysis show that: first, in the movie please be quiet there is a representation of the muted group principle, the acceptance and the assumption of muted group in the form of masculine political domination. Second, the movie please be quiet contains two forms of muted group, black holes in someone else’s universe and sexual harassment.
