Abstract

Logo is a form of visual communication in which the logo can describe the visual identity of a product, the purpose of making a logo is as an identity and a characteristic to be easily remembered by the public. The Halal logo is a logo that is very important for the Muslim community. Because having a halal logo on a product will ensure that the product has passed the halal certification test. In terms of granting halal certification through several stages that will be carried out by the Ministry of Religion's BPJPH. This change in the halal logo also raises several assumptions from various parties because of its shape which resembles a wayang mountain. This research wants to know the meaning behind the change in the Indonesian halal logo. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a semiotic approach belonging to Charles Sanders Pierce who is famous for his trichotomous triad, namely representation, object, and interpretant. Data collection techniques were carried out by interviews and documentation. After the data has been collected, it is analyzed using Charles Sanders Pierce's semiotic approach to then draw conclusions. The background to the change in the halal logo was the transfer of authority from the MUI to the Ministry of Religion's BPJPH. The selection of the latest halal logo also does not intend to carry a cultural theme, namely a shape resembling a mountain of wayang. From the research that has been carried out, based on an analysis of Charles Sanders Pierce's semiotic theory, the halal logo belonging to the Ministry of Religion's BPJPH contains meaning about the life of a believing human being. By visualizing the shape of a pyramid that resembles a mountain of wayang, wrapped in purple, it means that the higher the knowledge and the older the age, the more conical humans must be, or get closer to the Creator. In real life, the halal logo is a social convention.
