Abstract

Religious moderation is an important cultural strategy to maintain national unity by integrating religious values, customs and local wisdom. The Pakualaman Kemantren in Yogyakarta City is an example of cultural and religious diversity that has the potential to trigger conflict. Religious instructors have an important role in maintaining public understanding of religion and are the spearhead of the Ministry of Religion in providing religious information. The purpose of this study was to find out the role of religious extension agents at the KUA Pakualaman in increasing the behavior of religious moderation in the Pakualaman community. This type of research is descriptive qualitative using data collection methods in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation. The subjects in this study were religious and community counselors at KUA Pakualaman. The results of this study indicate that the role of religious extension agents at KUA Pakualaman in increasing religious moderation behavior in the Kemantren Pakualaman community consists of an informative and educative role, a consultative role, and an advocacy role. They convey religious teachings effectively and accurately, help solve individual, family, and societal problems, and promote justice, equity, and overall well-being. This finding is in line with the government's decision which outlines the duties of religious instructors in a trilogy of functions. Religious extension agents at KUA Pakualaman are active in various activities such as conveying worship materials, providing advice, managing religious messages, and being a da'wah agent with a moderate attitude. With their role, religious extension workers at KUA Pakualaman play a role in shaping the behavior of religious moderation in the Kemantren Pakualaman community and become a liaison with government policies in the religious sector.
