Abstract

The problem of recidivism is a serious issue in the criminal justice system, where many convicts return to committing crimes after being released. The meaning of life is a critical aspect that can affect the process of rehabilitation and prevention of recidivism. This study aims to investigate the spiritual values and the meaningfulness of life for recidivists in Class IIA Penitentiary in Yogyakarta. The results of the study show that the spiritual values provided by LAPAS are divinity oriented and packaged in the form of a madrasa program. The process of spiritual application in madrasas takes the form of religious teaching such as reading the Koran, Islamic studies, congregational prayers, and other sunnah practices that contain spiritual values of compassion, harmony, and humility. Spiritual values become a reference material to find out the spiritual condition of recidivist after doing madrasa learning. This study also explains the condition of increasing the meaning of recidivists' lives after carrying out madrasah learning based on the achievements that have been obtained by recidivists. Given that recidivism is a serious problem in the criminal justice system, knowing the spiritual condition of recidivists and measuring the meaning of recidivism's life after undergoing rehabilitation in the form of madrasa learning is important to test the effectiveness of this rehabilitation. There needs to be further efforts from correctional institutions and related parties to improve rehabilitation programs based on spiritual values and ensure continuous support for recidivists after they are released. By paying special attention to aspects of spirituality and the meaningfulness of life, it is hoped that it can help recidivists change negative behavior to be more positive and reduce the level of recidivism in society.
