Abstract

This research originates from the background of the importance of preserving the communication culture of Tutur Pamali, which is one of the 15 oral messages in South Kalimantan. Tutur Pamali falls into the category of papadahan or commonly known as advice from the past, as the most subtle and polite form of prohibition in the culture of the Banjar Muslim community. Pamali has its own context of understanding and value in society, thus it is considered highly influential in daily communication. This research uses a qualitative method. Through Ethnographic method, it seeks to understand the perspectives and experiences of informants in the community. By observing, interviewing, and collecting audio, visual, and written data, the research analyzes the data on Tutur Pamali in the Banjar Muslim community of South Kalimantan. In data collection, the researcher uses observation, interviews, and documentation methods. The analysis employed by the author follows Miles and Huberman's four stages, namely data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of this research indicate that understanding Tutur Pamali Banjar involves three techniques. First is translation, understanding the Banjar language. Second is interpretation, comprehending or interpreting the sentences of Tutur Pamali in the Banjar language. And lastly, extrapolation, being able to see the underlying purpose and intention of a message conveyed through Tutur Pamali.
