Abstract

The limitations of farmers using cropping systems using old patterns have resulted in suboptimal agricultural yields so that food security is not achieved. So far, the farming culture tends to be conservative and difficult to accept change, including the farming system used. Even though innovation and changes to agricultural systems are important to build superior agriculture. It takes a way to communicate innovation so that it can be accepted by society. Development communication is one way to see how a new system is communicated to the public. One of the new systems found to maintain food security is the smart farm and garden system. This system is a new cropping system created by the Ministry of Agriculture. This farming system was initially considered strange because to increase agricultural productivity it was instead carried out with a spaced cropping system. However, in the process, the innovation was accepted by the majority of Pagergunung farmers. This pattern was spread by kiai Heri Kuswanto as the leader of the Lintang Songo Bantul Islamic boarding school. The researcher aims to find out how the process of dissemination and the results of implementing the smart farm and garden innovation in an effort to create food security in the people of Pagergunung, Bantul. To answer this research selected qualitative research methods. Data were collected by observation, interview and documentation methods. A total of 16 farmers were taken as informants, which included 13 farmers who adopted the smart farm and garden and 3 farmers who still refused the smart farm and garden system in Pagergunung Hamlet, Bantul. The results showed that the process of disseminating the planting system innovation until it was accepted by the community in Pagergunung used 5 stages, namely 1). knowledge stage, 2). persuasion stage, 3). decision stage, 4). implementation stage, and 5). confirmation stage. This stage is exactly the same as Rogers' diffusion of innovation theory. The most important stage related to acceptance and rejection is the knowledge stage, namely the stage of how the communicator conveys new knowledge to the communicant. In the Pagergunung case, this was done through three channels, namely interpersonal communication, social media, and social relations. This channel is different from Rogers' concept, the difference in social media is not limited to informing messages but as an educational tool so that they want to adopt innovation by influencing attitudes, instilling values and creating community emotions. Regarding the results of implementing the smart farm and garden innovation, it shows that 13 Pagergunung farmers adopted it, while 3 farmers rejected the smart farm and garden innovation. The difference in the results of this response occurs because each farmer adopting or rejecting the innovation has its own views in considering the advantages and disadvantages of the smart farm and garden innovation.
