Abstract

The ability to speak in public is a competency that students need to have, but based on data in the field, it shows that there are still problems related to public speaking anxiety in new students in college of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences UIN Sunan Kalijaga 2022. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between emotion regulation and peer social support with public speaking anxiety in new students. The research method used in this study is quantitative correlation. The subjects in this study were new students in semester II at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities UIN Sunan Kalijaga class of 2022. The sampling technique in this study used cluster random sampling with a total known population of 337 active students and the sample used was 107 students. The data collection method uses Likert-type scales including the Indonesian version of the ERQ emotion regulation scale from Radde et al., (2021) a peer social support scale prepared based on the theory of Sarafino & Timothi, (2011) and a speaking anxiety scale prepared based on Bodie's theory, (2010). This research data analysis technique uses multiple regression analysis with the help of the SPSS version 25 for windows application. The results of multiple regression statistical tests show that there is no significant relationship between emotional regulation and public speaking anxiety in new freshmen. Then the results of the analysis show that there is a significant relationship between peer social support and public speaking anxiety in freshmen. The results of the analysis also show that together there is a relationship between emotion regulation and peer social support with public speaking anxiety in freshmen. the higher the emotion regulation and peer social support can reduce the level of public speaking anxiety, and or vice versa. This finding provides an effective contribution of 18.8% to public speaking anxiety in freshmen. The implications of these findings can be the basis and input related to the need for training to improve emotion regulation and activities that can increase awareness of the importance of emotion regulation and peer social support in new students in colege
