Abstract

The Indonesian Islamic education is facing a problem on how to blend education studies and the application together. The oldest Islamic education institution in Indonesia, pesantren, has been trying to do so by establishing higher educations such as University of Darussalam (UNIDA) of Gontor and University of Hasyim Asy’ari (UNHASY). This study focuses on the theistic integration of science in the two universities. Qualitative approach was employed to discover the ideal theistic integration by analyzing those universities’ pre-eminence. The subjects of the study were the rectors, vice rectors, lecturers and students. Data were collected through observation, interview and documentation technic, and were analyzed under data-collecting, data-condensing, data-display and conclusion-drawing verification. Data validity was based on the degree of credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. The results show that: first, the urge of theistic integration of science of UNIDA and UNHASY was due to the Indonesian Muslim’s poor mastery on science and the fast-growing science in secular western countries. The basic concept of theistic integration of science was the integrating revelation and nature under theistic worldview. The integration was a circular interconnected pattern allowing various disciplines to communicate and relate to each other. Second, the construct of the integration in UNIDA was formed out of multi-layer interpretations of the Holy Qur’an, multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary, and trans-disciplinary approach, and Islamized science; while multi-layer interpretations, multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary approach and Hadratus Syeikh Hasyim Asy’ari’s thoughts as the basis for development in UNHASY. Third, the theistic integration of science in both universities was implemented through an in-class learning system and day-to-day activities.
