Abstract

Self-disclosure is a relationship of openness between human beings who have closeness through interpersonal communication. This study examines interpersonal communication in building self-disclosure of parents and children who migrate. The purpose of this study aims to find out how interpersonal communication builds self-disclosure of parents and children who migrate to students of Communication Studies at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta Class of 2020. The theory use in this research is the need for interpersonal communication from Yosal Iriantara and the theory of self-disclosure dimensions according to Joseph A. Devito. The informant collection technique uses a purposive sampling technique, where sampling is based on certain considerations and criteria. Respondents taken amounted to 6 people consisting of 3 pairs of parents and children. This study used source triangulation using a developmental psychologist, Dr. Aisah Indati, M.S. Qualitative descriptive research method by adjusting the reality in the field through interviews, observation, and documentation. The results of Interpersonal Communication research in Building Self-Disclosure Between Parents and Children can be concluded that self-disclosure between children and parents can be built with interpersonal commnication carried out by both of them. The better the communication between parents and children, the more self-disclosure will be awakened. Based on the findings of the researchers there are several ways to build self-disclosure between parents and children through several things including approaching children or parents, respect each other, acceptance, good response, honesty with each other, trust, and create a comfortable space for storytelling.
