Abstract

Based on the results of initial observations, researchers found a phenomenon that occurred in Kepek 1 Hamlet, Gunungkidul, namely that many children still had good polite behavior with their peers or with older people. So that attracted the attention of the authors to conduct research with the formulation of the problem how is interpersonal communication between parents and children in forming manners in Kepek 1 Hamlet, Gunungkidul?. This research includes qualitative research using a descriptive qualitative approach that uses data collection methods in the form of interview techniques, observation and documentation. This study uses the theory of interpersonal communication characteristics and the theory of courtesy indicators. The subjects in this study were four families who had children aged 11 to 17 years and lived in Kepek I Hamlet, Gunungkidul. The results of this study indicate that the characteristics of interpersonal communication between parents and children in forming manners in Kepek I Hamlet, Gunungkidul are openness, approach and direction to children. Characteristics in the family from the role that is applied by the family is the formation of good manners in children. This can be proven in the daily life of children who use good speech when talking to other people, respecting other people, and respecting elders.
