Abstract

Phubbing is the tendency of someone who chooses to play with a smartphone rather than interact with the people around them. Phubbing behavior occurs among student organizations that should understand how to create effective communication. By raising the title "Phubbing Behavior in the Communication Process in Regional Student Organizations (Descriptive Study on Members of the Yogyakarta Kediri Student Association Class of 2022 - 2023)", this thesis aims to examine and describe the influence of Phubbing behavior on social interaction in the communication process in student organizations. The type of research used is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. Methods of data collection using interviews, observation, and documentation. The theory used in this research is Media Dependency Theory. The results of this study indicate that the Yogyakarta Kediri Student Association has an addiction to smartphones because they cannot be far from smartphones. However, the phubbing that occurs is relatively low because members of the association apply communication ethics when interacting directly. The effects of phubbing among members of the Kediri Student Association include Wrong communication, decreased value of delivering messages, decreased quality of social relations, social exclusion, being the subject of conversation, reduced empathy, loss of information, and wasted time.
