Abstract

The objective of this study is to explain the intentions of stock investors of Surakarta using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Exogenous variables comprising attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavior control serve as the predictor of endogenous intention variable. Sharia literacy as moderation variable was added for the novelty of the study. To make the TPB a more explaining model, TPB decomposition was carried out by providing predictor of constructs within TPB. While overconfidence, excessive optimism, herd behavior, and psychology of risk were used to decompose attitude, subjective norm was decomposed using internal normative belief and external normative belief. In addition, resource facilitating conditions and self efficacy decomposed perceived behavior control variable. This quantitative study collected primary data from 307 respondents of sharia stock investors of Surakarta who responded to the questionnaires. The data were analyzed under Partial Least Square (PLS) with SmartPLS 3.9 software. The results show that variables of attitude, subjective norm, and perceive behavior control have a significant positive effect on sharia stock investors. Variables of overconfidence and psychology of risk have a significant positive effect on attitude. Internal normative belief and external normative belief affect the investors’ subjective norm. Sharia literacy does moderate the effect of attitude on the investors’ intention, but the opposite occurs with subjective norm and perceived behavior control variables.
