Abstract

This study aims to analyze and describe the culture of information access among the Orang Rimba Makekal Hulu in the Bukit Dua Belas National Park, Jambi Province. It focuses on understanding the information needs, identifying the obstacles encountered, and exploring the efforts made to access information. The research employed a qualitative case study approach, with purposive sampling as the sampling technique. Data were collected through observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. To ensure data validity, source triangulation, data collection technique triangulation, and time triangulation were employed. The results of this study are (1) The Culture of Access to Information among the Orang Rimba is still upheld based on local wisdom, which is includes practices like besesaluang, nonggo benar, gussets, natural signs, clues, and fairy tales. However, the Orang Rimba have also adapted their information access to modern technology, such as using mobile phones as a means of accessing information. There are taboos, rules, or norms within the forest community regarding information access. (2) The information needed by the Orang Rimba related to the economy, including prices of palm oil, rattan, and other plantation products, as well as health-related information. (3) There are various obstacles in obtaining information within the forest. These include geographical challenges due to poor and distant access roads, lack of cellphone signal, absence of electricity, and disturbance from machines near the forest edge. Other obstacles may come from the individual themselves or from individuals responsible for conveying information. To overcome these obstacles KMB (United Makekal Group) play a crucial role in accessing information as a mediator, in addition to strengthening corporation with various parties such including collaboration with the Sokola Institute for educational purposes, partnering with the Health Office/Pukesamas to address health-related issues, and collaborating with local NGOs and other organizational networks in Jambi that support the access of the Orang Rimba to information. Within the Rimba itself, the Traditional Leader and other officials have a significant role in regulating information access. They enforce rules based on Orang Rimba traditional verses and implement sanctions, including fines and sanctions from the Orang Rimba gods.
