Abstract

This thesis examines the role of the religious organization Nahdlatul Wathan in building synergy between Islam as a religion and local wisdom as a socio-cultural phenomenon in the socio-religious development carried out in Lombok. The existence of Nahdlatul Wathan as the largest organization in Lombok can mobilize large masses because it is considered capable of properly expressing theological and legal normative dogmas. This is in line with the complexity of the diversity that exists on the island of Lombok and the cultural pattern of a pluralistic society that has a strong religious side and also local wisdom on the other hand that is maintained. The purpose of this study is to reveal and explain the Nahdlatul Wathan organization's role in the socio-religious development carried out in Lombok. This thesis is expected to be used as reference material for studies and considerations both theoretically and practically in conceptualizing the development paradigm. In this study, the authors use cultural theory by Koentjaraningrat and the theory of religion as a cultural system by Clifford Geertz as analytical tools. This research is descriptive-qualitative, with a socio-cultural approach as a scientific step to obtain accurate data, and through interviews, observation, and documentation techniques. The results of this study indicate that Nahdlatul Wathan is closely related in displaying a moderate side that is adaptive-accommodative in the midst of the plurality of Lombok society. This moderate side can be seen in Nahdlatul Wathan, which pays more attention to maintaining local traditions that are developing and considered good and relevant to the needs and development of the ummah. In addition, there is an innovative attitude, respect for the old (traditional reflection), and synergy between the two. This can be seen in Nahdlatul Wathan's socio-religious actions in responding to the religious culture that occurred in the Sasak Tribe of Lombok. Accommodative and wasathiyah Islamic values are the pillars of Nahdlatul Wathan in synergizing religion and culture within the framework of the spirit of nationalism and love for the country.
