Abstract

Discrimination, bullying and social isolation are still visible in an inclusive education environment. Placement of students with disabilities in an inclusive education environment is not a solution to the problem of social isolation. The handling needs to look back at the ideal philosophy of inclusive education by providing the services needed and supporting the learning activities of students with disabilities. PLD provides space for volunteers to contribute in the form of assistance, guidance and intervention in the form of peer counseling. Materially, the volunteers do not benefit, however, in reality the number of volunteers is increasing. The role of volunteers in providing social support is still highlighted in the academic realm, so studies and analysis are needed to reveal the motivation and role of volunteers in peer counseling practice at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. This study used a qualitative approach and a phenomenological strategy for selected respondents in the form of six PLD active volunteers who had provided assistance for at least one semester, four students with disabilities who received intensive assistance, one PLD staff and the head of PLD UIN Sunan Kalijaga. Data was collected through participatory observation methods, semi-structured interviews and documentation and analyzed using qualitative analysis methods with an interactive model from Miles and Huberman consisting of data reduction, data display and conclusion and verification. Self-determination theory (SDT) and the American Volunteer Functions Inventory were used to analyze the motivation of PLD volunteers. The practice of peer counseling is studied in the form of social support expressed by Philippa Williams and Philippa Williams, Bert N. Uchino, Darcy Uno, and Julianne Holt-Lunstad. The results showed that the motivation of PLD volunteers came from within the volunteers (intrinsic) in the form of religious beliefs and empathy. In addition to intrinsic motives, integrated motives also come from a combination of empathy and understanding of volunteers in providing assistance to students with disabilities. The extrinsic motives come from the careers the volunteers want to achieve, the role models and their social networks. Volunteer peer counseling practice is provided in three forms namely. (1) emotional support to meet the individual needs of students with disabilities, (2) support for social acceptance to meet the social needs of students with disabilities, and (3) informative support to meet the academic needs of students with disabilities. From this peer counseling practice, it has an impact on better conditions for students with disabilities, including social acceptance, self-efficacy, self-esteem, and self-actualization of students with disabilities.
