Abstract

Research on the characterization of activated carbon from coconut shell using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) for purification of used cooking oil using the adsorption method has been completed. The purpose of this study was to characterize coconut shell activated carbon and determine the levels of free fatty acids, peroxide value, and water content in used cooking oil before and after adsorption treatment. Tests carried out included characterization of activated carbon using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and adsorption by soaking, heating and stirring for 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 minutes. The characterization results of coconut shell activated carbon show that the surface has a pore size of 3.159μm and a standard deviation of 1.861μm. The results of the oil content test were Free fatty acids had decreased from 17.92% to 16.64%, 14.08%, 12.08%, 10.24%, 5.12% with a variation of the time used 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 minutes.
