Abstract

Steel AISI 4140 has a good combination of mechanical properties of strength, toughness, and wear resistance. However, steel AISI 4140 will experience mechanical failures such as micropitting and scuffing in hostile work environments. The impact of such mechanical failure is that the short-term use of components results in serious resource waste. One of the attempts to improve the mechanical properties of steel AISI 4140 is depositing CrN thin film in different nitrogen pressure stages with nitrogen pressure varied by 3 × 10-3 mbar (CrN-03), 4 × 10-3 mbar (CrN-04), and 6 × 10-3 mbar (CrN-06). The results show that the size of CrN crystals grows through agglomeration, a corresponding increase in nitrogen pressure is directly proportional. While the CrN lattice parameter values are inversely proportional to the nitrogen pressure's levitate, caused by the interstitial increase of nitrogen in the chromium lattice. After subjecting three separate samples to an elevated nitrogen pressure, it was noted that there was a noticeable augmentation in surface roughness through the topologies. CrN thin films performed best at crN-04. This is proved by a lattice parameter value of 4,1452 Å which approximates the database with a crystallite size of 19,1 nm. The density dislocation point 2,76 × 10-3 nm-2. The measurements indicate that the surface roughness values for Sa, Sq, and Sz are 13,4 nm, 16,9 nm, and 184 nm, respectively
