Abstract

This study examines Hamka's role as one of the Islamic reformers in Indonesia. While many Islamic reformers are considered unappreciative of sufism, this doesn't apply to Hamka. Hamka's Sufi ideas can be found in the book Tafsir Al Azhar. Within this book, Hamka's understanding of verses related to sufism themes can be discerned. Numerous scholars have researched the Sufi aspects of Hamka's approach in Tafsir Al Azhar. The outcomes reveal differences in opinions regarding the nature of Sufism in Tafsir Al Azhar. These disparities provide an opportunity to further explore the Sufi nuances within Tafsir Al Azhar. One way to do this is by examining Hamka's interpretation of Surah Al-‘Ashr, a Surah considered significant by Ash-Shafi'i as a life guide. One meaning that can be derived is that Surah Al-'Ashr can serve as a guide to attain happiness in both the worldly life and the afterlife, aligning with Sufi teachings. This research attempts to address the problem formulation regarding how Hamka interprets Surah Al-'Asr, the method, nature, and characteristics of his interpretation, and the presence of modern sufi values within it. The purpose of this research is to comprehensively understand the questions posed in the problem formulation. This can be achieved through library research with Tafsir Al Azhar as the research object. Other research materials used include literature related to Tafsir Al Azhar and Hamka's thoughts. The approach employed is a thematic approach to a particular Surah. After conducting exploratory analysis of the research subject, it is evident that the method utilized by Hamka in interpreting Surah Al-'Ashr is the analytical (tahlili) method. In the context of the sufi approach, Tafsir Al Azhar can be classified as an allegorical Sufi interpretation (tafsir sufi isyari). As for the characteristics of interpretation employed by Hamka, they are marked by social ethics (adabi al ijtima’i). Additionally, Hamka also extensively cites the sayings of past scholars, both classical and modern. Meanwhile, the content of modern Sufi values in Hamka's interpretation of Surah al-'Ashr is centered on the foundation of faith or monotheism (tauḥīd). This faith serves as the primary basis of modern Sufi teachings. Hamka states that a person of faith is someone who holds the belief that life is governed by the will of Allah SWT. Hamka also asserts that faith generates an awareness of the purpose of life in this world, which is to serve Allah and fellow human beings. Serving others is a manifestation of modern Sufi values, representing a fusion of social and religious sensitivity.
