Abstract

In reality, the most serious challenge in interfaith life today is how a religious person can properly define himself in the midst of other people's religions. Interreligious interaction is now increasingly showing its intensity. So it is not surprising that many people view the current era as a "new age" (New Age), which characterizes the rapid human attention to the spiritual world. Indonesia is actually very rich in experiences related to diversity. At its peak, there was a time when diversity was a source of collective pride. On the other hand, there are also times when diversity becomes a disaster. The second experience tends to bring dilemmas to people in their lives, leading to intolerant practices. This certainly cannot be solved only through the socialization of religious moderation as often campaigned by the government through the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Religious moderation should be an indispensable trait that is inherent in each individual. The implementation of religious moderation should also lead to the scope of respect, understanding, and cooperation between followers of different religions as Schoun said. In this way, religious moderation helps to avoid conflict, promote tolerance, and build interfaith harmony. The method used in this research is a qualitative method with a library research approach. The results of this study indicate that the substance of Frithjof Schoun's thinking about religious moderation is that according to him, although on the surface religions are different, but in essence all religions have something in common. Schoun's belief departs from his view that all religions have a reality or essence, namely exoteric and esoteric. The exoteric nature is the external nature, where at this level all religions have dogmas that undoubtedly include different and even conflicting laws, rituals and beliefs. But faced with the esoteric nature of the religion, namely the inner nature, all religions with their differences and contradictions finally meet. Similarly, the concept of religious moderation aims to find a middle ground between existing differences.
