Abstract

Many developments in the interpretation of the Qur'an occurred during the classical era, especially during the Abbasid Dynasty. One example of the development of Qur'anic interpretation using the method of bi al-ra'yi is the work of Ar-Rāzī. He was a prominent scholar of tafsir during that period and a pioneer of the bi al-ra'yi method. His tafsir work, known as Mafātīh al-Gaib is considered a phenomenal book and is often referred to as an encyclopedia of the Qur'an. His tafsir is unique, and some have said that it contains all kinds of knowledge except tafsir itself. Ar-Rāzī was a scholar who emphasized his own thinking, and his background in various fields of knowledge, including theology and the sciences, greatly influenced his interpretation. His expertise in kalam (theology) and other sciences made his tafsir, especially the concept of human creation, intriguing for research. In his tafsir, we can find critiques of certain theological schools or philosophers, along with scientific explanations of human creation. This unique characteristic has sparked the interest of researchers in studying the concept of human creation in the book Mafātīh al-Gaib. Based on this background, there is questions regarding how the concept of human creation is presented in Mafātīh al-Gaib. In other words, researchers aim to explore the discussions related to human creation found in Ar-Rāzī's tafsir. Additionally, considering the diversity of knowledge encompassed in his tafsir, the research seeks to identify the dominant approach used by Ar-Rāzī in the concept of human creation. This research attempts to uncover the epistemological aspects of Mafātīh al-Gaib. Here, epistemology is used as an analytical method focusing on the sources of interpretation, methods of interpretation, and the tendencies in meaning-making, particularly regarding the theme of human creation. From the study of Ar-Rāzī 's interpretation, several conclusions can be drawn. First, it addresses the origin of human creation from clay and the process of human embryology. Second, it interprets human nature from a philosophical perspective, emphasizing the significance of human intellect. Human beings are considered to reach their highest potential when they utilize their intellect effectively. Third, it conveys moral messages and the purpose behind the narrative of human creation. The moral messages include demonstrating the greatness of Allah, serving as evidence of resurrection after death, and advising humans to avoid reprehensible qualities. In these interpretations, Ar-Rāzī employs the method of taḥlīli (analytical) and tends to provide interpretations within the realms of knowledge and philosophy.
