Abstract

The mufasir's grip over power frequently exhibits masculine dominance, which causes the representations and beliefs that are communicated to readers to frequently be patriarchal, inferior, and androcentric. Muhammed Tahir Ibn Asyur, a modern mufasir, composed at Ta'rir wa at Tanwir to correct interpretations that go against the Qur'an's intended meaning, in contrast to earlier mufasirs. The values of the Qur'an are included in this tafsir book because they will benefit both this world and the hereafter. Ibnu ‘Āsyūr gives interpretation of the Qur'an with the goal of advancing both Islam and the world. Additionally, this tafsir book was published in the 20th century, a time when Muslim scholars were actively discussing gender equality. This research provides two problem formulations. How is Maryam's viewpoint in the Tafsir al Tahrir wa at Tanwir based on Sara Mills' critical discourse analysis model? And what aspects of gender equality are depicted in the account of Maryam in the al Tahrir wa at Tanwir? The goal of this study is to analyze Maryam, a female figure in the Tafsir al Tahrir wa at Tanwir, in light of the challenge that has been posed. Utilizing Sara Mills' critical discourse analysis theory to examine how Maryam's stance is expressed in Ibn Asyur's tafsir. The analysis concentrated on the mufasir's position, the female character's position, and the reader's position. This study investigates the tafsir book as a source of literature. The findings demonstrate that the mufasir holds the subject's position, i.e., the person who interprets the feminine character. In his tafsir book, the mufasir occupies a position of independence, authority, and power. Ibn Asyur's status as a person who describes female characters serves as an example of the mufasir's status as a gender inclusive mufasir because he treats women on par with males. Maryam, who the mufasir describes as a woman who was born as a critique of the culture at the time, is in the position of the object. By bringing up his ideology in the tafsir book, the mufasir uses the reader's stance as leverage in negotiations with the reader. Ibn Asyur strives to reflect the ideology with these stances, Ibn 'Āsyūr tries to represent the ideology of equality between men and women, namely the discourse of ontological equality (the nature of humanity) and discourse on equality of roles in public spaces.
