Abstract

Ecotheology is a contemporary theological exploration in the Islamic theology realm. There is a revisiting of environmental preservation concepts based on Islamic texts, which are then translated into the present context. Since the 1990s, ecology has become a priority agenda for Muslims in Indonesia. Muhammadiyah, as a mass Islamic organization, has shown a clear concern for the environment. Within the structure of Muhammadiyah, there is a dedicated environmental movement known as the "Majelis Lingkungan Hidup" (Environmental Council). The establishment of the Environmental Council is a manifestation of Muhammadiyah's commitment to environmental preservation. This delegation of responsibilities started with the development of environmental movement concepts and models, with a focus on preaching practices. This study aims to examine the ecotheology concept of Muhammadiyah and its implementation efforts by addressing two questions: how does the Environmental Council formulate the ecotheology concept that underlies the ecotheology paradigm of Muhammadiyah, and how is ecotheology implemented in Muhammadiyah's policies? This qualitative study involves literature review and interviews with members of the Environmental Council as data sources. The collected data is then organized and presented in a narrative structure. The research findings reveal that Muhammadiyah's ecotheology concept is rooted in the theological concept of Al-Ma'un, as taught by KH. Ahmad Dahlan. This concept promotes mutual assistance among humans and environmental preservation, which Muhammadiyah interprets as one of its methods. The programs implemented by the Environmental Council aim to prevent both structural environmental degradation through legal measures and cultural environmental degradation through environmental education programs. From this research, it is evident that Muhammadiyah's efforts to protect the environment, from establishing the paradigm to formulating its fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), represent an application of the concept of environmental resacralization proposed by Seyyed Hossein Nasr. Through its ecotheology, Muhammadiyah has made impact on preserving the sustainability of the environment, particularly within the Islamic community and Muslim communities in Indonesia.
