Abstract

This research aims to explore the motivations of early adulthood individuals who choose to serve as abdi dalem in the Yogyakarta Palace. This study employed a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Additionally, three male informants, who were in early adulthood and legally employed as abdi dalem, were involved in this research. To validate the data, three significant others who were aware of the informants' activities as abdi dalem were also included. Data collection in this study was conducted through semi-structured interviews. The collected data was then analyzed using data reduction techniques, data presentation, and conclusion. The research revealed that the three informants became abdi dalem due to various dynamics. These dynamics include receiving information from teachers, being motivated by specific dreams, and being offered career opportunities to join the Kraton Yogyakarta. Internal motivations for serving also emerged in this study, including an interest in deepening and preserving Javanese culture and a desire to apply the knowledge acquired during their education. External motivations for the three informants to become abdi dalem include encouragement from family members and acquaintances who had already became abdi dalem. While engaging in their activities and duties as abdi dalem, the three informants has been experienced a sense of tranquility and a continuous desire to receive blessings from the Kraton Yogyakarta.
