Abstract

In intercultural communication, adjustments are needed to make intercultural communication run well. But in reality, not everyone can adjust well. An example is that some Papuan students in Yogyakarta are anarchic. These ultimately also forms a negative stereotype of the people of Yogyakarta towards all Papuan students, including students from Raja Ampat in Southwest Papua. In responding to these negative stereotypes, they make adjustments to reduce this negative stereotypes. This study aims to describe the self-adjustment made by Raja Ampat students in responding to negative stereotypes from the people of Yogyakarta. This research uses a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation methods. The data will be analyzed using descriptive research methods by providing an overview of the communication accommodations made by Raja Ampat students in response to negative stereotypes in Yogyakarta. The results of this study indicate that Raja Ampat students do a lot of convergence in the form of language use, ways of speaking, behavior, and activities. In addition, Raja Ampat students also made several divergences to maintain their cultural identity. From the adjustment, they can build positive relationships, increase interaction, and make the people of Yogyakarta more flexible towards information in responding to negative stereotypes that are owned by the people of Yogyakarta.
