Abstract

Teachers have a responsibility in nurturing the independence of children. In Group A of TK ABA Surya Kencana, there are 4 children who still require physical assistance, 6 children who cannot yet open food packaging, 4 children who continue to run around during meals, 6 children who struggle to open Tupperware or Aqua bottle caps, 10 children who cannot yet neatly arrange their shoes, 4 children who still need help putting on their shoes, and 3 children who require assistance when going to the toilet. Physical independence refers to a child's ability to take care of themselves physically. The issue in Group A of TK ABA Surya Kencana is that there are still some students who lack physical independence. The objectives of this research are to determine the level of physical independence in Group A, understand the efforts made by teachers to develop physical independence in Group A, and identify the supporting and hindering factors for teachers in nurturing physical independence in Group A of TK ABA Surya Kencana Ngaglik Sleman Yogyakarta. This research uses a descriptive qualitative research method. The subjects of this research include the school principal and the teachers of Group A. Data for this research were collected through observations and interviews. Data analysis techniques used include data condensation, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The validity of this research is ensured through source triangulation and technique triangulation. The results of this research can be summarized as follows: Efforts made by teachers to develop independence in children in Group A of TK ABA (‘Aisyiyah Bustanul Athfal) Surya Kencana Ngaglik Sleman Yogyakarta include: (1) Physical independence in TK ABA Surya Kencana meets national standards, where children can do things on their own or help others (BSB), they can do things independently and consistently without teacher assistance or example (BSH), but there are some children who still need reminders and assistance from the teacher (MB). (2) The efforts made by teachers include providing physical activities, encouragement, support, opportunities, affection, and teaching responsibility. Physical independence in TK ABA Surya Kencana is achieved through habituation and providing examples. (3) In developing physical independence in early childhood, TK ABA Surya Kencana has supporting factors such as the environment, family/parents, teachers, friends, APE (Additional Physical Education), and mood. Hindering factors in physical independence at TK ABA Surya Kencana include fear, illness, bad mood, the sequence of children's positions, lack of facilities and infrastructure, and gender.
