Abstract

Eugenol is one of the basic compounds that can be synthesized to produce vanillin compounds. Eugenol can be converted to vanillin through isomerization and oxidation reactions. This research carried out the synthesis of vanillin using a one pot system method using a base activated CuO/Bentonite catalyst and H2O2 oxidizer in one pot. The aim of this research is to characterize base-activated CuO/Bentonite based on FTIR and and XRD as well as analyzing the products produced in the one pot system synthesis from eugenol using a base activated CuO/Bentonite catalyst and H2O2 oxidizer The base-activated CuO/Bentonite catalyst preparation process was carried out using wet impregnation and calcination methods. The impregnation process is the process of saturating the bentonite pores with a copper metal solution through adsorption at a temperature of 60oC. Meanwhile, the calcination process is the process of providing heat by flowing N2 gas at a temperature of 400oC. The base-activated CuO/Bentonite catalyst was successfully identified based on the FTIR spectrum by the presence of absorption at a wavelength of 777,14 cm-1 indicating the Si-O group which is characteristic of montmorillonite in bentonite and the XRD diffractogram indicated the presence of CuO at the peak of 2=35,36o and 2=39,16o. This catalyst can convert 2.8% vanillin through a one pot system reaction which was confirmed via GC-MS chromatogram. Based on the data obtained, concluded that the base-activated CuO/Bentonite catalyst can be used in the one pot system synthesis reaction of eugenol to vanillin
