Abstract

Research on the effect of the addition of ZnO filler and sorbitol plasticizer on the manufacture of bioplastics derived from kepok banana peels has been carried out. This study aims to determine the effect of adding the concentration of a mixture of filler ZnO and plasticizer sorbitol on the characteristics and biodegradability of bioplastics This research was divided into four stages, the manufacture and characterization of kepok banana peel starch, the manufacture of bioplastics, testing characteristics of bioplastics, and testing biodegradability. Manufacture of kepok banana peel starch produces yield of 1.65%. Characterization of kepok banana peel starch was carried out using FTIR (Fourier transform Infrared Spectroscopy) instruments. The production of bioplastics was carried out with variations (0g ZnO, 0mL sorbitol), (0,05g ZnO, 0,5mL sorbitol), (0,10g ZnO, 1,0mL sorbitol), (0,15g ZnO, 2,5mL sorbitol), (0,20 g ZnO, sorbitol 2,0mL), (0,25 g ZnO, Sorbitol 2,5 mL). Testing the characteristics of bioplastics was carried out by testing thickness, tensile strength, percent elongation, modulus young, water absorption, and water vapor transmission rate. Testing the biodegradability of bioplastics was carried out using the soil burrial test method for 12 days. The results showed that the addition of ZnO filler and sorbitol plasticizer had a significant effect on the characteristics of bioplastics, where each addition of 1% ZnO filler and 10% sorbitol plasticizer would increase thickness by 0.748 mm, decrease tensile strength by 0.486 MPa, increase percent elongation by 0.950% , reducing the modulus young value by 0.850 MPa, reducing the water absorption capacity by 0.975%, and reducing the water vapor transmission rate by 0.850 grams. hours-1 .m-2. The results of the biodegradability test showed a significant effect between ZnO filler and sorbitol plasticizer on the biodegradability value of bioplastics 4 days and 12 days, where each addition of 1% ZnO filler and 10 sorbitol plasticizers would decrease the thickness by 0.223% within 4 days, 0.674% within 8 days, and 0.958% within 12 days.
