Abstract

The Bhen-ghiben tradition refers to the customary practice of presenting a wedding gift during a Madurese traditional wedding ceremony. Bhen-ghiben relates to the commodities or gifts the groom's family traditionally presents to the potential wife's residence during the marriage ceremony. In Somalang Village, located in Pakong Subdistrict inside Pamekasan Regency, the Bhen-ghiben products predominantly consist of various appliances and household furnishings, such as furniture items including beds accompanied by mattresses, wardrobes, dressing tables, sets of chairs or sofas, and similar items. The Bhen-ghiben tradition is deemed essential in every wedding ceremony held in Somalang Village, Pakong Pamekasan. While this practice does not hold any sacred significance, it is observed that certain individuals may choose not to partake in it due to financial constraints faced by the groom's family or the willingness of the bride's family. Nevertheless, the community endeavors to uphold the Bhen-ghiben tradition to avoid feelings of embarrassment associated with its omission. There exist individuals who are unable to enter into matrimony. This study employs a descriptive-analytical method within the field of research, utilizing the Islamic legal sociology framework. The research incorporates the Urf and functionalism theories as theoretical lenses to examine the subject matter. Data gathering approaches commonly employed in the study include interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings of this study suggest that the Bhen-gibhen Tradition has evolved into a cultural heritage that continues to be practiced in the present day, albeit with modifications in the activities involved. The exact date of implementation of this practice is unknown, yet it continues to be upheld as a crucial obligation in establishing familial connections. The Bhen-gibhen tradition in marriage imposes a significant burden on men seeking to marry due to the substantial nature of the required items. This custom is observed throughout all social strata, encompassing individuals of varying economic means, regardless of their wealth, age, or social status. The concept of 'Urf Shahih refers to customary practices that are deemed permissible and do not contradict any established Islamic norms or regulations and including of „Urf fasad because it is considered burdensome. In the cultural practice of 'Urf, a precise protocol exists for determining the quantity and manner of presenting goods to the bride, which also extends to the bridal celebration. The groom's relatives carry the bestowal of wedding gifts, who personally bring them to the bride's residence. A formal handover contract typically accompanies this exchange. In the traditional wedding ceremony, Urf Amali, the host, assumes responsibility for all aspects of the reception, including the procurement of Bhen-gibhen goods, decorations, and food and drink dishes for the guests. This task is typically carried out with the assistance of close relatives and neighbors.
