Abstract

The background of this research is the emergence of a movement caused by the death of Mahsa Amini, a woman from Kurdistan, Iran. Mahsa Amini was arrested by the Iranian morality police on 13 September 2023, for not wearing the hijab properly. Three days after his arrest, she died in the custody of Iranian morality police. This Reaserch aims to find out the root of the emergence of the movement over the Mahsa Amini as a phenomenon of post-Islamism. Also aim to determine the implications of Iran’s social and women’s movement from Islamism to poat-Islamism. This research uses liberal feminism theory and social movement theory from the perspective of Doug MchichAdam, John D. McCharty and Mayer N. Zald, which focuses on three sets of important factors, including political opportunities, mobilizing structures and framing. This research uses library research with descriptive analysis research methods. The sources for this research are scientific articels and news related to social movements and Iranian women in the Mahsa Amini cese. The result of this research found that: Fisrtly, Mahsa Amini’s movement arose from the public’s response to act of violence carried out by the Iranian regime due to strict regulation regarding the mandatory hijab policy. Demands are increasing due to the repressive actions carried out by Iranian authorities to calm the masses and then progress to gender equality and individual women’s rights, legal reform, and freedom of control over the body. Secondly, social media has an important role in mobilizing the masses. In this case, the social media platform Twitter has a significant role in mobilizing and framing the movement. Third, Mahsa Amini’s movement aims at democratization and liberalization of the reform of Iran’s legal system. On the other hand, the Iranian people as citizens of a country with an Islamic ideology have a limits to Western-style liberalization and democracy thinking. This movement does not explicitly explain about post-Islamism. However the characteristics of this movement lead to a discourse of post-Islamism in Iran.
