Abstract

Although urban tourism has transform a concern of the government of Yogyakarta City as a center of civilization and culture, there are still weaknesses in the development of renewal trends in new tourist attractions and gaps that can be optimized and redeveloped as a tourist destination. Research found this phenomenon in the Rejowinangun as a tourist destination consisting of cultural, skills, herbal, culinary, and agro. On the basis of this phenomenon, this study is present to explore the trend of urban tourism development and look for new gaps that can be developed into tourism-based culture (tangible and intangible). This study is conducted through a case study approach, and the researcher has conducted in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation with eleven informants. Based on the data collected and interpreted, the researcher found several important findings that are divided into two aspects. In the first aspect, the researcher managed to find the trend of urban tourism development in Rejowinangun. Firstly, culture is a cluster that is developing rapidly compared to the other four clusters. Secondly, there is a lack of attention to product branding in the craft cluster. Thirdly, tourism development can encourage the emergence of new businesses for cluster members. In the second aspect, researchers also found that there are gaps that can be developed by urban tourism managers in Rejowinangun. Firstly, branding efforts for craft products have the potential to excel because of their educational value. Secondly, the existence of local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) will be better recognized by the public if their management is systematically organized. Therefore, it is important to develop urban tourism by paying attention to the strength of social participation in combining the elements of attractions, accessibility, and amenities of tourist destinations. In reality, the Rejowinangun community has a tendency to develop tourism with cultural value compared to other clusters. Apart from that, there are other findings that the participation aspect of young people is lacking because they are more focused on their own affairs. In this study, the researcher recommends that the local government, in responding to the same issue, add the concept of DMS (Destination Management System) as an integration part in urban tourism development in different locations.
