Abstract

This study aims to explore the role and influence of ustadz communication using three dimensions of communication, namely interpersonal communication, group communication, and media communication, in the formation of good character of students in the Islamic boarding school of SMP Muhammadiyah Al Mujahidin. The character building of students is an important aspect of Islamic education, and the role of the ustadz as a character-building agent has a significant impact. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study at SMP Muhammadiyah Al Mujahidin. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with ustadz, and analysis of interpersonal, group, and media communications used by ustadz in the context of good character formation. The results showed that interpersonal communication between ustadz and santri involves a personal approach that builds a relationship of trust. Group communication is manifested in discussion activities and group activities to encourage collaboration and mutual understanding among students. Meanwhile, media communication occurs through the use of electronic media and technologybased educational materials to convey character values to students. The combination of these three dimensions of communication contributes positively in shaping the character of students. Interpersonal communication creates close relationships, group communication fosters collaboration, and media communication provides variety and appeal in the delivery of character education materials. Strategies in character building are carried out through habituation, moral knowing, moral loving, moral feeling, moral modeling. Factors that influence the ustadz's communication with students in character formation include; quality of the ustadz, quality of relationships, teaching approaches and methods, and physical environment. This research is expected to contribute to further understanding of the implementation of ustadz communication with a multidimensional approach in the formation of student character. The practical implications include strengthening communication strategies in Islamic educational institutions, especially at the junior high school level, to increase the effectiveness of character building through a holistic communication approach.
