Abstract

Critical thinking is one of the four competencies that children should possess from an early age in the 21st century, alongside communication, collaboration, and creativity. Children aged 4-5 years are in the phase of reading pictures. Wordless books can be designed as a medium to stimulate the critical thinking abilities of young children. Therefore, the development of wordless books that can be used to stimulate critical thinking skills in early childhood is highly necessary. The aim of this study was to find out: (1) The development of wordless book to improve 4-5 children’s critical thinking abilities. (2) The appropriateness of wordless book to improve 4-5 children’s critical thinking abilities. (3) The practicality of wordless book to improve 4-5 children’s critical thinking abilities. (4) The effectiveness of wordless book to improve 4-5 children’s critical thinking abilities. This study used A Research and Development model by using ADDIE design (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). The subjects in this study were class A in RA AL-Barokah Tegal. The techniques of collecting the data were observation, documentation, interview, and questionnaires. the validity test of the product using due diligence and effectiveness tests. The appropriateness and the practicality used the P test. The Effectiveness test using N-Gain test and one group pretest posttest design experiment with paired sample t-test. Based on the results of this study, it showed that has been produced wordless book to improve 4-5 years of children’s critical thinking abilities. Beside that, a media validity test was obtained with a test percentage value of 96% with very valid eligibility criteria. While the material validity test showed a percentage value of 92% testing with very valid criteria. The practicality test of use by homeroom teachers A1 and A2 was 100% and 97%. Based on the calculation of the N-Gain test of 0.71 on a small scale and 0.68 on a large scale, it means that wordless book is effective in improving 4-5 years children’s critical thinking abilities. Furthermore, paired sample t-test was carried out on a small and large scale with the acquisition of sig. (2-tailed) of 0.000 < 0.05 with α = 0.05 which means that there is a difference in average scores between children’s critical thinking abilities pretest and posttest scores. The conclusion of the results of this data analysis shows that the development of wordless book is effective in significantly improving 4-5 years children’s critical thinking abilities.
