Abstract

The historical trajectories of Islamic Higher Education in Indonesia reveal a fascinating transformation, evolving from modest Islamic High Schools to established Islamic Religious Institutes and culminating in prestigious Islamic Universities. This dynamic evolution intertwines inextricably with the forces of modernization and globalization, characterized by rapid advancements in science, technology, and information. While these forces have undoubtedly fueled positive progress, they have also presented challenges to the landscape of Islamic Religious Higher Education. In this context emerges Ma'had al-Jami'ah, a unique educational initiative formulated as part of the Indonesian Ministry of Religion's policy. As leading stakeholders in Ma'had al- Jami'ah's implementation, Islamic Religious Universities shoulder the critical responsibility of conceptualizing, designing, and executing its innovative curriculum. This qualitative study explores the Ma'had al-Jami'ah program, implemented at three Indonesian Islamic Religious Universities (IRUs): UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung, and IAIN Kediri. Combining interviews, observations, and document analysis, the research employs data triangulation and an interactive model for robust analysis (collection, reduction, display, and verification). The study aims to uncover the rationale behind Ma'had al- Jami'ah, trace its historical roots (genealogy), and identify its underlying educational ideology. Additionally, it investigates the program's implementation within the IRUs themselves. This research unveils that Ma'had al-Jami'ah emerges as a beacon of innovation in Islamic higher education. Recognizing the needs of diverse Muslim students in a globalized world, it offers a groundbreaking program. This initiative equips new students with comprehensive Islamic knowledge, fostering individuals of strong faith and character. By providing integral religious insights, language skills, and social awareness, Ma'had al-Jami'ah empowers its graduates to navigate the complexities of contemporary life. Born from the demands of modernization and institutional transformation, it tackles the challenge of students' varied backgrounds, bridging gaps in Koranic literacy, religious understanding, and practical skills. Ultimately, Ma'had al-Jami'ah stands as a testament to the commitment of Islamic Religious Universities to nurture well-rounded Muslims equipped to excel both individually and within society. Though dominated by a "rationalist conservative" approach, the three Ma'had al-Jami'ah programs are not monolithic. While sharing core objectives, values, and pedagogical features, each prioritizes certain areas. UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang focuses on language mastery, while UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung emphasizes classical texts. IAIN Kediri, interestingly, delves deeper into both classical texts and Hadith scholarship. This flexibility showcases the program's ability to adapt to specific institutional contexts while retaining its philosophical core. Integrating seamlessly with the broader IRU framework is crucial to unlock Ma'had al-Jami'ah's full potential, ensuring its transformative influence permeates the entire Islamic higher education ecosystem with far-reaching consequences for the future. The study concludes that Ma'had al-Jami'ah is integral to IRUs' academic development, aligning its educational program with broader institutional objectives, with diverse implications for Islamic higher education as a whole.
