Abstract

Differences in understanding a hadith are unavoidable, given the distance between us and the Prophet. This difference in understanding often makes people confused, especially when the practice has been carried out for a long time, the claim of who is the most correct continues to be echoed and has even reached the stage of berating, accusing each other either with accusations of Ahlul Bid'ah, Ahlul Besek and so on. This requires us to understand what bid'ah actually is, what sunnah is, and what makes an action fall into the category of sunnah or bid'ah. This research is a qualitative study that uses library research that directs to literature related to the research. By using a critical descriptive method. And also using Sheikh Jamil's method of understanding Sunnah and Bid'ah Hadith. After conducting a fairly long study, the researcher concluded that first, Sunnah and Bid'ah according to Sheikh Jamil are the same thing, namely Muhdats (new things) that there is no nash (text) al-Qur'an or sunnah that tells about it, whether it is a new thing that is bad or good. Secondly, Shaykh Jamil makes two limitations to verify a Bid'ah or Sunnah. One, he verifies it with a law that not everything left by the Prophet is haram. Two, the specialization of worship with a certain time, place, date is not Bid'ah. Third, the Prophet's birthday is part of reviving the Sunnah of the prophet, where people gather then the Qur'an, Hadith, Shirah of the prophet Muhammad's life journey is recited, people show each other their joy at the birth of the prophet Muhammad. food is offered to the attendees then they eat it and then they go home.
