Abstract

This thesis examines the concept of ghazwul fikri among KAMMI activists. There are two main questions in this study, namely (1) what is the concept of ghazwul fikri in the view of KAMMI activists? and (2) what is the strategy of KAMMI activists in dealing with ghazwul fikri? Researchers used a qualitative study with an ethnographic approach (participant observation) and personal communication with KAMMI administrators and activist members. Then this thesis also combines online data (netnography). KAMMI was chosen as the object of discourse for the reason that considering that this organization was born in solid opposition to the government during the New Order era which was considered to be following Western policies, the cadres generally understand the concept of Ghazwul Fikri. This thesis contributes to the study of KAMMI's understanding of the concept of Ghazwul Fikri in Indonesia. The results of this study show that Ghazwul Fikri in the view of the KAMMI community is a form of resistance to Western cultures, such as entertainment, religion, and politics. According to KAMMI, nowadays people are no longer fighting physically but by means of a war of thought, causing a tense dialog or debate. Interestingly, KAMMI cadres feel that there is a shift in cadres' critical analytics from the New Order era compared to the reformation era. In the New Order era, KAMMI staunchly opposed the authoritarian and westernized government system, arguing that it was against Islamic principles. Whereas in this reform era, KAMMI has slightly lost its critical power. KAMMI activists respond to Western culture in a lifestyle dimension that tends to be more flexible. In this case, they only pay attention to internal cadres, according to which there are many differences among Muslims in addressing the term Ghazwul Fikri. And differences of opinion are a common thing that does not need to always be questioned. However, efforts to fortify themselves against Ghazwul Fikri also need to be made as a form of self-defense by consistently conducting coaching and Islamic studies such as providing material on Ghazwul Fikri at Daurah Marhallah and liqo'.
