Abstract

Modified android applications (MOD) are applications that have been modified and developed by modifiers with the addition of additional and premium features that are provided for free so that they become more attractive than the official application. These apps do not come from official developers and are considered illegal. One of the risks of installing MOD apps is the possibility of getting a virus and the risk of being blocked by the authorities. Even so, it is an application that is currently in demand by students, especially in Yogyakarta. From this, this research tries to answer two questions. First, why many Yogyakarta students use illegal modified android applications (MOD) and Second, How is the practice of using illegal modified android applications (MOD) among Yogyakarta students in the sociological review of Islamic law. This type of research is field research with a sociological juridical approach. Data collection techniques using interviews, questionnaires and documentation. While the analysis of this research uses the Miles and Huberman method which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing and verification. Then analyse it using the theoretical framework, namely the theory of awareness and legal compliance. The results of this study show that the modified android application (MOD) is an application that is currently in great demand by students in Yogyakarta. The factors behind students using MOD applications are efficiency factors, social factors, additional features, attractive appearance factors, and minimal advertising factors. The use of MOD applications in copyright law is an act of copyright infringement and in the view of Islam is categorised as an act of theft or taking someone's rights illegally which causes moral and material loss to the creator and copyright holder. Awareness and legal knowledge of Yogyakarta students related to copyright is at a high percentage level. Nevertheless, many Yogyakarta students still use the MOD application. This is because legal awareness is something that is still abstract that has not been manifested in the form of real behaviour. On the other hand, students get benefits that can be felt directly from the use of these applications that are concrete in nature, such as being able to enjoy premium features in an application without having to pay.
