Abstract

The Sebambangan tradition is a form of marriage where a girl is taken away from her home and brought to the groom's place in a secretive manner. This tradition is a significant part of the cultural heritage of the Pepadun Lampung community in the village of Lehan, and it continues to be preserved. The enduring nature of the Sebambangan tradition is a result of the continuity of the values embedded within it. It is not only a cultural legacy passed down through generations but also serves as the identity of the Pepadun Lampung community in the Lehan village. The dynamics within the Sebambangan tradition reflect the adaptation undertaken by the community in response to the evolving changes of the times. This study aims to address two main questions: How is the dynamic of the Sebambangan tradition practiced by the Pepadun Lampung indigenous community in the village of Lehan?; Why are there adjustments in the practice of the Sebambangan tradition among the Pepadun Lampung indigenous community in the village of Lehan? This research is qualitative in nature, specifically categorized as field research, and its characteristic is descriptive-analytical. The researcher employs a social-historical approach, utilizing both primary and secondary data sources. The data collection methods include interviews and literature review. This study indicates that there are five changes that have occurred: initially, the act of taking away a girl could involve deception and agreement, but now it requires an agreement between the bachelor and the girl to participate in the running procession; originally, there was no minimum age limit for participating in Sebambangan, but now there is a minimum age limit of nineteen years; the adjustment of abduction costs, which initially were at least tens of thousands of rupiahs, has now increased to a minimum of hundreds of thousands of rupiahs; the financial gap between the bachelor and the girl is no longer a reason to perform the Sebambangan tradition; and initially, the act of taking away the girl was done by walking or cycling, but now it involves the use of a car. The changes in the implementation of the Sebambangan tradition in Lehan Village are attributed to four main factors: legal changes requiring an agreement between the bachelor and the girl to participate in the running procession and setting a minimum age limit of nineteen years; social norm changes eliminating economic reasons; modernization involving the use of cars; and economic changes leading to adjustments in the abduction costs. From the perspective of maslahah mursalah, the occurring changes can be classified as maslahah hajjiyat, aiming to bring convenience in implementation and efforts to avoid potential difficulties.
