Abstract

A person on a spiritual journey through worship and ritual practices encounters a variety of unique experiences that others do not. Serenity and meaningfulness in one's life are also related to the habit of tafakkur, which is contemplating the greatness of Allah and observing His existence in creating and maintaining the order of the universe. Imam Al-Ghazali explains that tafakkur refers to the process of presenting two pieces of knowledge in the heart in order to gain a third, more profound knowledge. Although Imam Al-Ghazali has elaborated the concept of tafakkur towards the environment well, this understanding still needs to be researched more deeply. Further research can help clarify the concept of tafakkur on the environment that needs to be considered in its application. The formulation of the problem of this research is (1) How does Imam al-Ghazali view the concept of tafakkur? (2) How does Imam Al-Ghazali explain the concept of tafakkur to the environment? The purpose of this study is to obtain a deep understanding of Imam al-Ghazali's views regarding the concept of tafakkur and also explain in detail how Imam al-Ghazali explains the concept of tafakkur to the environment. This research uses a type of qualitative research that uses library data or library research. Data analysis techniques involve processing and organising data, as well as finding important information and findings. The approaches used in this research are philosophical and epistemological approaches. This research concludes that Imam Al-Ghazali viewed the concept of tafakkur as an in-depth effort to combine theoretical and practical knowledge in the individual's heart, which ultimately helps achieve deeper spiritual understanding and profound growth. In his perspective, tafakkur is a noble command of Allah to His people, in which humans are invited to contemplate the signs of Allah's majesty in the universe. Imam Al-Ghazali outlines the stages of tafakkur which include the acquisition of knowledge, feelings of awe, awareness of God's majesty, and the habitual stage of looking at His creation. Imam Al-Ghazali elaborated on the concept of tafakkur towards the environment by viewing the universe as signs of God's infinite power and wisdom. In his thoughts, he contemplated the wonders and diversity that exist in nature, including land, mountains, seas, and the diversity of plants and animals.
