Abstract

While claims of truth and exclusivity from each religion often highlight differences among them, there is, in fact, a fundamental unity among these religions. According to the perennial philosophy of Frithjof Schuon, this unity resides in the esoteric dimension. Schuon believes that beyond their exoteric differences, the spiritual essence of major world religions shares a profound and universal commonality. In the esoteric perspective, exclusive claims of religions can be interpreted as human attempts to communicate the same spiritual reality, albeit through different languages and symbolisms. This opens up the understanding that religions fundamentally share a universal spiritual foundation, transcending external differences. However, in reality, many misunderstand Schuon's concept as a form of religious pluralism or syncretism. Therefore, it is crucial to inventory and idealize Schuon's thoughts to prevent misconceptions about his concept. This research utilizes a qualitative method with a literature review approach to achieve a comprehensive understanding of Schuon's philosophy. The findings of this research indicate that the concept of the "unity of religions," as elucidated by Schuon, goes beyond being a mere theoretical construct. It fosters a profound understanding that provides a foundation for comprehending essential similarities among religions. This esoteric perspective not only paves the way for a more constructive interfaith dialogue but also shifts the focus toward the unity of spiritual essence, rather than solely emphasizing visible exoteric differences. Consequently, through an exploration of the esoteric dimension of religions, a common ground can be discovered to bridge the divergences that manifest at the exoteric level among world religions.
