Abstract

The Library of Ciputra University Surabaya provides an Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) facility to facilitate users in searching for information stored in the library. This feature is crucial in the library's effort to provide the necessary information services to users. The aim of this research is to determine the recall and precision of the OPAC information retrieval system of Ciputra University Library Surabaya and to understand the efforts in utilizing OPAC as a means of information retrieval in Ciputra University Library Surabaya. The method applied in this research is a mixed-method approach. In this study, the first step involves the collection and quantitative experimental data analysis to answer the extent of the effectiveness of using the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) as an information retrieval tool for library users. The second stage involves the collection and qualitative data analysis to answer the second question, which is what strategies can be implemented to enhance the utilization of OPAC as an information retrieval tool at Ciputra University Library Surabaya. The results of this study indicate that the OPAC of Ciputra University Library has not yet achieved an adequate level of effectiveness as an information search tool, as indicated by the precision value falling into the moderate category. The evaluation of OPAC effectiveness is based on the precision of the information retrieval system. Although recall receives a high value (0.772798), the precision obtained is still relatively low (0.547531). Out of the six library resources, Ciputra University Library has fulfilled five existing resources, including facilities and infrastructure, personnel or human resources, library material collections, budget, and methods and systems used in running the library, while the resource of regulations and policies has not been fulfilled. Ciputra University Library itself has implemented strategies to ensure that users receive sufficient training or assistance in using OPAC features, including user education, information literacy classes, on-the-spot information retrieval services, and rally games.
