Abstract

This thesis aims to elucidate the construction aspects of stigma and power relations present in the discourse on dogs in the interpretation work of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Lajnah Kemenag) entitled "Hewan dalam Perspektif al-Qur’an dan Sains." The interpretation of dogs by Lajnah Kemenag partly generates stigmatization, associating dogs with impurity and negativity, even though the Qur'an does not mention any negativity about dogs. The purpose of this research is to reveal the interpretation of dogs by Lajnah Kemenag through the commentary work titled " Hewan dalam Perspektif al-Qur’an dan Sains," which predominantly examines stigmatization and knowledge relations that normalize and marginalize the discourse on dogs. This study is a qualitative research that involves library research using a descriptive-analytical method, depicting the interpretive process conducted by Lajnah Kemenag analytically, focusing on the commentary work " Hewan dalam Perspektif al-Qur’an dan Sains," specifically concerning the discourse on dogs. The thesis employs two approaches: first, the stigma theory used to unveil narratives containing stigmatization of dogs in "Animals in the Perspective of the Qur'an and Science." The second theory is the power-knowledge relation theory as a tool to explain the forms of power present in the compilation and discourse of Lajnah Kemenag's interpretation. Primary research data are obtained through literary sources, specifically the commentary work "Hewan dalam Perspektif al-Qur’an dan Sains," and “Ashabul Kahfi on Journey” in Youtube. Secondary data from studies related to the Ministry of Religious Affairs and relevant books and articles. The significant findings of this thesis include the constructed discourse of the stigma of dogs developed dominantly in Lajnah Kemenag's interpretation. Stigmatization arises through the interpretation of dogs categorized within religious, social, and health discourses. Lajnah Kemenag perceives that dogs should be avoided due to impurity reasons, considering their saliva as unclean and disease-carrying. However, medical studies show that dog saliva is beneficial, containing enzymes to boost the immune system and antibacterial properties. Another reason is that dogs are considered wild animals with the potential to attack humans. Nonetheless, Lajnah Kemenag also asserts that dogs can assist humans in various purposes such as agriculture, farming, or hunting. From the perspective of power relations, the process of compiling scientific interpretations by Lajnah Kemenag is dominated by the dominant discourse related to the impurity of dogs, tending to be constrained by specific cultural or historical contexts. The interdisciplinary approach in the interpretation is also influenced by marginalization or lack of attention, caused by the emphasis on the impurity of dogs as the primary reason for rejection, fearing it may disrupt the religious rituals of Muslim communities. This condition reflects an orientation focused on religious and cultural dimensions, lacking a broader perspective in terms of knowledge and social aspects.
