Abstract

Kuttab Al-Fatih, an educational institution that has been relatively recently established since 2015, reflects the Islamic spirit of some Purwokerto residents as urban Muslims who try to practice a lifestyle according to Islamic law. Through Kuttab Al-Fatih, the founder tried to shape the identity of its citizens by choosing a form of institution that existed in the early days of Islam, namely Kuttab, which is considered a new form in the present. Learning is carried out using the faith curriculum and the Qur’an with the aim of strengthening the identity of Kuttab Al-Fatih Purwokerto. This research aims to describe the process of socio-cultural identity formation in Kuttab Al-Fatih Purwokerto and analyze the form of institutions, models and implementation of learning using habitus theory, social capital and arena as glue for forming sociocultural identity through basic education at Kuttab Al-Fatih Purwokerto. The research in this dissertation is field research, with the research location focused on Kuttab Al-Fatih Purwokerto. Data was collected by interviews, observation and documentation techniques. The collected data was verified by triangulation of both sources and methods. The approach used in this research is socio-cultural, with identity theory as the grand theory and Pierre Bourdieu’s habitusarena- capital theory as a supporter. The results of this research are three. First, Kuttab Al-Fatih Purwokerto is a model of a new form of institution in Islamic education in Indonesia. Second, the model from Kuttab Al-Fatih Purwokerto is a religious model; that is, all the existing subjects are religious lessons which aim to increase faith. This is implemented in all learning using a curriculum based on strengthening faith and mastery of the Qur’an. Third, based on the form, model and implementation of learning, the socio-cultural identity of Kuttab Al- Fatih Purwokerto is a Salafi identity, an identity adopted by some Muslims in the current era who try to practice a lifestyle as similar as possible to first, second and third generation Muslims (generation of the Prophet, companions, tabi’in and tabi’i al-tabi’in) namely the Salaf al-Salih. The implication of this research finding is to develop forms of Islamic education in Indonesia so that it is not monotonous. The formation of identity in an educational institution can be a basic reference in determining the concept, model and implementation of the curriculum that has been prepared by the institution so that the goals that have been set can be achieved. It is hoped that the authorities will implement policies to accommodate new forms and models of educational institutions to enrich the Islamic education system in Indonesia.
