Abstract

Representation is how a group/actor is described in a report. There are two important things in this representation: first, how a group is shown as it is means that the group is not presented badly just as it should be. Usually in the news there are several groups that are marginalized or more in control so that other groups are degraded. Second, with a sentence that contains ideology, how does someone actually appear in the news? So how is this representation used in online media Al-Jazeera in news of sexual harassment in 2010-2021. The sexually degrading news that the researchers took was the sexually degrading news on minors. This study aims to look at representations in the online media Al-Jazeera how news damages minors is depicted. The method used is descriptive analysis method which reveals the facts of social phenomena after being analyzed. From the online media Al-Jazeera using The Van Leeuwen's Critical Discourse Analysis theory which has two processes of inclusion and exclusion. Inclusion is how actors/groups are described in the news. The exception is how actors/groups are excluded in reporting. Researchers found that there are groups that are marginalized and groups that are very poor. In the news, hiding the perpetrators always hides and researchers find that there are several news stories that do not reveal an actor but only focus on discussing children as victims of the destruction. And there is also news that discusses the perpetrators but is described very badly.
