Abstract

The purpose of this research is to look into the grammatical equivalence of Arabic translation into Indonesian. The translation theory used to help scrutinize equivalence problems in Arabic grammar is that of Mona Baker and Catford. This research is motivated by the differences and grammatical characteristics of Arabic, which are typical, so that they are very different from Indonesian. Arabic has a different system for expressing linguistic aspects. This language system is explained in detail through inflectional cases, which are divided into several categories such as tenses and aspects, mood, gender, number, person, voice, definiteness, and even cases. This category arrives at the level of syntax, such as word order. Meanwhile, Indonesian does not experience inflection and has its own way of expressing linguistic experience. As a result of these differences, this research will focus on examining translation problems related to the category systems of the two languages and the mechanisms that can be used to produce equivalent translations using Mona Baker's and Catford's equivalence theory. The method used in this study is descriptive analytic, which involves describing the features of the language followed by an analysis of translation problems. The results of this research show that Arabic has a more detailed and complex language system category. Linguistic experience is expressed through inflection, while Indonesian is more periphrastic. Translation problems vary depending on the existing grammatical categories. The translation mechanism is carried out by making several changes (translation shifts) to forms and structures to produce textual equivalents, such as adding lexemes, changing the order, replacing other forms, and even removing information.
