Abstract

This research examines the novel Arwa>h}u S{akhra>ti al-'Asl by Mamdouh 'Azzam. This study aims to identify realistic and non-realistic conflicts and their positive functions in the novel Arwahu Sakhrati 'Asl. Researchers use Lewis A. Cooser's conflict theory to analyze conflicts that occur between individuals and groups. Social conflicts that occur do not only show negative functions but can also have positive impacts. The results of this study indicate that the social conflicts that occur in the novel are dominated by realistic conflicts, namely conflicts between individuals and conflicts within oneself. The non realistic conflict in this novel include the conflict that occurred between Mahmoud Jarar and Abed’s father, which did not make Mahmoud hate Abed, instead he still greeted and helped him. Furthermore, Abed had an employer who always defended him when the police pressed him with several questions. The positive functions contained in this novel include very sincere friendship, caring for each other, increasing solidarity, and also great devotion to parents.
