Abstract

This research is a qualitative descriptive research using field research that aims to explain and analyze the moral message contained in Arabic Calligraphy in the Great Mosque of Central Java Semarang City, as well as to explain the function of the moral message to the community, he said. The data collection methods used are the listen method, the cakap method, and documentation. As for the text written in the calligraphy, it is sourced from the Qur'an which includes: surah Yasin verses 1-83, surah Al-Fatihah, surah Al-Ikhlas, verse of the Chair (surah Al-Baqarah: 255), Asmaul Husna, surah Yusuf verse 108, surah Al- Mu'minun verses 1-11, surah Al- Anbiya verse 25, and the writings of Allah, Muhammad and the names of the Companions of the Prophet. The form of calligraphy in MAJT is embossed decoration calligraphy, while the type of khat or calligraphy used in the mosque is khat} S|ulus and Kufi, which is a very popular calligraphy in Indonesia today. The types of khat} S|ulus and Kufic although not used for the writing of the Qur'an today, were chosen because of their beautiful shape and relatively easy to read compared to other types of khat, and give the impression of the most beautiful, luxurious, and elegant design. The existence of Arabic calligraphy in accordance with the vision and mission of MAJT functions as 1) the function of da'wah (invitation) to convey moral messages in the form of messages of tauhid, zikrullah, akhlakul karimah and worship, 2) the function of representation and identity of Islamic culture, 3) the function of spiritual and social communication, and 4) the function of beauty. While the moral message contained in Arabic calligraphy at MAJT is the moral message of Tawhid, the moral message of Zikrullah, the message of Akhlakul Karimah and the moral message of Worship. Based on sociolinguistic studies in the theory of language function and speech society, these moral messages are a small part of the MAJT congregation can understand and understand them well by the MAJT congregation, but most pilgrims cannot understand it well, faktors that greatly influence the level of such understanding are religious education background and knowledge of Arabic calligraphy itself.
