Abstract

The Volunteer Team for Humanity (TRUK) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) located in Sikka Regency, Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). TRUCK was driven by SpSS (Servae Spiritus Sanctus/Mission of the Servants of the Holy Spirit) nuns together with SVD (Societas Verbi Divini/Society of the Word of God) brothers and priests. TRUK focuses on humanitarian and human rights issues, especially on issues of violence against women. Violence against women in Sikka Regency is very high and disturbing. This is because the norms and culture in NTT are very strong with patriarchal values. This problem became a serious concern for Catholic monks and nuns so they formed TRUK. Various efforts have been made by TRUK to reduce the number of violence against women but there is still resistance or rejection from society so that it is less than optimal. Until 2023, TRUK will implement a transformative gender approach as an effort to reduce violence against women. This research uses qualitative methods with a social anthropological approach. The research results show that TRUK as an NGO has carried out several activities or actions as a breakthrough in suppressing violence against women. This action is an action that is based on the theory of a transformative gender approach and intersectionality. Through this, their actions are able to suppress violence by involving men, changing norms and targeting key figures in society. A transformative gender approach prioritizes a local approach so that good values that are gender equitable can be accepted, rather than rejected because they are considered western products and not in line with local culture.
