Abstract

Synthesis of p-menthen-9-ol has been carried out using the basic ingredient citronellal which is distilled from citronella oil. Citronellal can be converted to p-menten-9-ol through cyclization and isomerization processes. In this research, the p-menten-9-ol synthesis process was carried out using a one pot system method using a ZnO/acid activated palm shell charcoal catalyst and formic acid oxidizer in one container (one pot).The aim of this research is to characterize ZnO/acid-activated palm shell charcoal based on FTIR and XRD and analysis of the products produced in the one pot system synthesis of citronellal using a ZnO/acid activated palm shell charcoal catalyst and N2 oxidizer. The preparation process for the ZnO/acid-activated palm shell charcoal catalyst was carried out using wet impregnation and calcination methods. The impregnation process is the process of saturating the pores of palm shell charcoal with a solution of zinc chloride metal through adsorption at a temperature of 110o C. while the calcination process is the process of providing heat by flowing N2 gas at a temperature of 400o C. The acid-activated ZnO/palm shell charcoal catalyst was successfully identified based on the FTIR spectrum by the presence of an absorption wavelength of 561.55 cm-1 indicating ZnO stretching bonds which are characteristic of carbon in palm kernel shell charcoal and the XRD diffractogram indicated the presence of ZnO at the peak of 2θ= 30.1o , 33.91o and 36.60o . The catalyst can convert via GC-MS chromatogram. Based on the data obtained, it was concluded that the ZnO/acid activated palm shell charcoal catalyst could be used in the one pot system synthesis reaction of citronellal to p-menthen-9-ol producing a yield of 4.86%.
